Couple nights at the Store

Sunday I went up 2nd again at the Store. The first comic started off strong then fizzled out. I ripped on him a little bit throughout my set. My set was decent. Had some ups, and ended somewhat ok. The comic texted me later apologizing for the way he ended. I let him know that it was no problem at all. It's good for comics to stay humble, but it is important to have some sort of self assurance. I feel bad that other comics so readily insult my roommate and his comedy. They were ripping on him and the "manager" actually said, "how does that feel?" What does he expect me to say? I just wanted to make sure his job wasn't in jeopardy, which I found out it was not. I do think he does have a false sense of the reactions he is getting on stage. Out of curiosity I asked him if people had bad things to say about me, to which he responded, "I honestly can't say anyone has said bad things about you." Monday was the Store open mic. It was slower than usual. The manager actually cut the show short because the crowd wasn't drinking. When I went up there was 5 audience members. I chatted with the couple in the front row, which I found out he was a radio dj in the SD area. I zinged him a little bit, but all in good fun. I chatted with him after the show, and he seemed to enjoy what I said. Him and another comic that night said I was a natural. Cool to hear. Tuesday was a bringish show. The headliner was an LA dude. He ran the light by 20 plus minutes. I asked the "manager" at what level do you have to be where you can run the light by that much. Without breaking stride, "He said once you have comedy central credits, when you're on showtime, when you're a weekend headliner." I still don't get it, but oh well. Most of the comics on the show were pretty sub par, esp considering there was 120 people for a Tuesday show.

I AM PATHETIC

Wow, I'm such a piece of shit. I need to stop drinking, I;m just pathetic. I hate myself more and more everyday. Wednesday was Winston's and then I did a bar show downtown. Winston's was pretty busy. One girl brought a good amount of people. The open mic ran long so I didn't do any time. The booker at the Comedy Store in L.A. was at the Store so one of the guys that was supposed to do the show downtown backed out to do the store. I took his spot downtown. It was a fun show. I basically just talked to the crowd and slipped in some jokes here and again. They gave us a $20 food comp. which I blew through on a round of drinks. I drank too much and had to drive home. Which I did because I'm a piece of shit loser. God I hate myself. Thursday was the Store. It was a small, tight crowd. I spent the first two minutes ripping on the comic that went on before me. My actual jokes didn't really hit, but it was a tough night throughout. Friday was Winston's. It was one of the better, respectful crowds we've had in awhile. Some guys didn't take advantage of it, and just ripped on the audience saying they were old. I have no idea why they would insult a paying, laughing audience. I told the comic before me, "you can do jokes." Which he did and did really well. I was slightly unsure if I could follow him. I did well, most jokes hit. I was told after by a couple people that I did even better than the comic that went before me. That felt pretty cool. Saturday I did a house party. It was an adult shindig, and I got way too drunk. It was crazy because I was feeling fine, and all of a sudden I can't remember anything. I'm worried I made an ass of myself. I really need to stop drinking. I am pathetic. I'm such a piece of shit loser. I'm disappointed with myself on a daily basis. I have no idea why I do this to myself. I spent my set ripping on the guys who's birthday it was and making fun of his house. After someone told me they saw Louie Anderson and Jerry Seinfeld back in the early 80's and that he didn't enjoy them. He said I have a special look, and am funny. That was cool.

Comedy Store madness

Sunday was work/ perform at the Store. I went up second. They were a small, yet supportive crowd. I opened with some dumbed down, easy jokes. I think it went ok, no real issues. Monday I hosted the Store open mic. It was somewhat fun. I get to drink for free, but don't get paid. I played off most of the comics sets, and chatted with the crowd. I think it was an overall fun show. I don't mind hosting every once in awhile, but I get enough hosting with Winston's. Tuesday was a benefit show at the Store. Before the show some of the comics were discussing who were some of the best comics in San Diego. I hate this convo, and being around it. There is one clear favorite and then there is everyone else. It pisses me off that no one ever gives me any respect. It's crazy how few shows I get asked to be on, and how I manage to get laughs at some of the hardest venues and toughest spots. Some people have these high praise for some comics, but those guys don't do open mics. They are always performing at prime venues, in great time slots. Anyone can be funny at those times. I got slightly worked up, but oh well. I was a little out of it during my set. I chatted with the crowd a little too much, and almost let things get out of hand. My set was meh. Tried some jokes, and it was decent. Two comics after me some of the crowd had to be asked to leave. The guy was wasted and being a huge douche. Some people just don't know how to act in public. he left his card at the club just to prove a point to not sign the bill.

Somewhat busy and opened a weekend

Long week. Sunday I work/ performed at the Comedy Store. I went up third. I tried a few jokes then just bailed and chatted with the audience and stuck jokes in between. I think I really opened up the show and made things easier for the comics that followed me. I had a few audience members say they enjoyed me, even the ladies I picked on. Another comic told me not to worry, if I went up later I would have done much better. He didn't mean anything by it, but it was slightly a backhanded compliment. He said me and another guy at the Store are the best at crowd work. I would have to agree. Monday was the open mic. Small, small, small crowd. But I think I did fine. Somewhat dug myself a hole by insulting one of the comics, in my humorous way. But I crawled out of it working hard and trying out some new funny jokes. I was happy with it overall. Tuesday was a charity show at the Store. I wasn't expecting to go up, but when I get there I see I'm doing ten minutes in the middle of the show. Well I was somewhat blah about it. I never know how these shows are gonna go, and I like to have some idea on whether I'm going up on a given night. Anyways, the entire crowd was young, hip, and friends. This is usually my target audience. They liked me from the start and started off very strong. I struggled a bit in the middle, but ended strong. I was happy with it, and the head security guard said I probably got the best reaction. Wednesday was Winston's. I went up before and tried some more newish jokes. Most of them went well and I was happy about it. Had a few of the newer people say they really enjoy me, which is always great to hear. Friday was Winston's and this was a travesty. Wow, I knew it was going to be bad but no one could have expected it to be this bad. It was likely the hardest ten minutes I've done in a long time. But I didn't feel bad. I made it through the struggle. Sometimes I get off stage at the Store after not doing so well, feeling like I could die, but I felt more alive after the Winston's set. Half the crowd, that the co headliner brought in a limo, didn't speak English. I could have packed it in, shit on the crowd, but I kept plugging away with my jokes. I told the bartender not to put the dude on the tab, cause he was such a douchey douche magee. Anyways, were outside chatting, a limo drives by, she jokingly says I bet that's him. I say no that is him. She laughs, limo parks, he gets out. Ahhh comedy, why must you attract these people. Saturday was a long day. I worked at the OB Beach Ball from 10 to 6, got quite a bit of sun. Even made it to the gym, granted only for 15 minutes, but I made it. After OB, I went to the Store. It was all older comics. Like from the 70's. A girl walked in, saw the first act, and said "are they from the 70's?" I simply said, "Yup." They opened by spraying and spitting beer into the crowd and got on the piano players' equipment. Such a stupid play. Next guy was like an awful open mic er, and I was told he's been doing the same set for 30 years. WOW! Headliner was funny enough, just very old school. So I was asked to open the show. I knew it was going to happen eventually, but wasn't excited or looking forward to it. Just want to be recognized. Obviously the day I'm pretty tired and slightly buzzed I'm asked to open the show. Not only did I have to open a show featuring comics my dad's age, which drew a crowd my grandparents age, but I had to host the entire show. Which I hate hosting shows with people I don't know. Plus it's just annoying to have to go up after people and just bring up the next comic. It works so much better to just bring up the next person. It ruins the whole flow to have another person brought into the mix. We'll my set was meh. I was nervous and don't think I ever really got comfortable on stage. I got some laughs, but nothing steady and just wasn't great, esp. with a crowd of 130 or so. I did around 6 minutes of sub par. The door guy and a few other people said I did well. But I truly don't think I did as well as I could have. Wasn't prepared the way I should have been. And fumbled to where I wanted to go. Granted I got 5 minutes to prepare, but I should have a solid 7 minutes "in the can." I was happy about the way I hosted, and thought that was the best part of my set. I think I fumbled at the closing, and said "email ccccaaaards," which got a chuckle, think I screwed up a dude's name, but think my hosting was much better than the set.

Not much to report

Winston's Wednesday was pretty busy, but sadly most of the people came with free tickets so I made no money. I did go up before the contest and worked on some new jokes. One worked really well and I had a few comedians tell me after it was funny. There were 3 no shows, but I had one guy jump in. So we had a total of 6 which makes for a decent show. Friday was Winston's. There was a good amount of people in the crowd but they got there early so they were somewhat tired when I got up. I tried some of the stuff I did Wednesday, but it was meh. I ended strong with an older joke and that was good. There was a dude that brought 10 or so people but got way too drunk and just got up there and killed the momentum of the show. His friend's were shocked and didn't have a clue how to react after that point. One of the headliners did pretty well, but he had a handful or so people there for him. I made a few bucks so I can't complain. Saturday was the Store. The headliner was the co creator of the Chappelle show. He was pretty funny, and seemed pretty grounded and down to earth. Thanked everyone and seemed genuine. He opened with a joke about having $43 in his checking which kinda bothered me as it was pretty obvious, unless he made some of the worst money decisions in the world, he should have a good amount of money. Anyways, the line up was a lot different that what usually plays on the weekends. Younger and a lot edgier. I thought the feature was in my opinion the funniest I'd seen there since I started working there. Just really enjoyed his style and delivery. Haven't heard back from any of the agents. Today I sent out a video to try to be a made coach with MTV. Doubtful anything will happen but I am happy with the clean video I made and might as well send it out.

Bunch of crappity crap

Thursday was working/ performing at the Store. There was a pretty big crowd, nearly 150. I went up second and started off a little choppy, but was able to recover with the 2nd joke and got a pretty decent clean video. It was short, around 5 minutes, but I was happy with it. I sent it to the agent guy the next day, and still haven't heard back. Oh well. Friday was pretty slow at Winston's. There was maybe 10 or so audience members. Which consisted of 3 middle aged women in the front row that didn't care much for the show. They enjoyed my banter between comics but didn't like the set up jokes. I had Jesse playing tv theme songs between comics, and I think that made the show a little more enjoyable. Saturday was working at the Store. The shows were pretty slow. The comics were really nice, and one of them was really funny. I actually gave him a call back. Not sure he will ever use it, but he did seem happy that I gave it to him. Still didn't open a show, but was told the 2 managers think I'm funny enough, but I need to be working there longer. So dumb. Sunday was back to the Store to work and perform. Very small crowd, 20 or so people. I went up 2nd to last. Started off pretty rough. Crowd just didn't enjoy me. I broke off set and chatted with them a bit. Went dirtier towards the end, and ended up doing somewhat ok. Monday was the Store open mic. I tried voicing out a few new jokes. One joke that bombed the night before, got a really good reaction on Monday. It's so weird. The other jokes I just tried to voice on stage, just didn't do so hot. It was a roller coaster but I can't complain. Tuesday was the Store. It was a show headlined by the dude that threatened to beat me up a few months back. I didn't look him in the eyes the few times he tried to talk to me. He asked me how things were, and I responded, "living." He then tried telling me he wasn't in the mood to perform cause his grandma and friend just died, to which I ignored him. I can't stand people like that. He got a good response with his same awful, stereotypical jokes. One of the Shore sons was there and talked to him after the show about getting him to do a weekend. So pathetic considering he tried complaining that they got in free asking, "Is he the owner or something?" Idiot.

Busy times at the Store

Sunday was pretty slow at the Store, 18 maybe 20 people at the max. They were a good crowd though, until I went up. I'm trying to get a clean tape and my first two jokes tanked pretty hard. I quickly just abandoned the jokes and chatted with the crowd. I went back into jokes and they just didn't work very well. I talked to a girl and her parents for a bit, and got some good laughs from them but the jokes really didn't work with the whole crowd. I actually got some groans, which I guess makes sense. Monday was the Store open mic. Slow crowd again. I went up and ranted for a minute about my girlfriend. Then tried some older jokes, which got little to no response. Chatted with a lady in the front, but couldn't really make much out of that. Tuesday was the Store again. 35 or so people. They were small but they were a good crowd. I went up 3rd and did 10 minutes. Had a few people come up to me after and say I did well. The headliner did 40 and it was kinda rough. He has a lot of offensive jokes, and after 20 minutes of that it gets annoying. Some people walked out, and one even said, "Why is he doing the most time, he is the worst." Same guy offered to buy me a drink, but I was working so said no. After the show I did the podcast. I think it went better than I expected, but I think there was a lot more stuff we could have got into, but the hour flew by. Wednesday was Winston's. They made tickets and had the bartenders pass them around the street fair. There was about 20 or so people there, who were willing to laugh at good jokes. A few of the comics brought a crowd, so that's a plus. One of the comics went up first and got a little drunk and started somewhat heckling the comics. It was annoying but I let it go. I would say the show was a successful, esp. for the 2nd of the first round. I think this contest will be more popular. Let's hope. I walked over to bar eleven after. It was pretty dead. I tried crowd work, but that didn't have much laughter either. Who knows, they may be cancelling that show, so glad I continue with the struggle.
