Well I've been playing a lot of poker in the last week. Been going really well actually, been getting kinda unlucky in some big pots. Kept my cool for the most part, but did freak out and lost a little bit. Refocused and turned in a profit everyday. Have been off from the depot since last Friday and I couldn't be more relaxed. 40 hours at that place is just too much with everything else I'm balancing. And the $70 a day I make working there isn't worth the stares and attitude I get from customers.
The last couple nights I went over to the Comedy Palace mostly to get out of the house and interact with humans. The main reason I can't play poker full time is that it's a depressing live style. Winning and losing hundreds of dollars in minutes can take a toll on someone. It's sad to just stare at a screen and sit in bed or on the couch all day. Makes me feel like a waste. So I went to the Palace Monday during the comedy competetion. I was enjoying hanging out and the owner comes up to me and says, "You're still in the competition right Jeff?" I say "No, thanks for reminding me." Jokingly, but some comics take everything so serious. He just walks away, returns 2 minutes later and says he's putting me up. Cool. A small part of me thought there was a chance I could go up as there is only 6 people in each round, which makes it tough for the show to run at least 90 minutes. I'm not real sure why they have so few people in each 2nd round. Clearly trying to milk the contest as long as possible, but 6 people is kind of a joke when 4 advance. 8 would be reasonable, but 10 in the first and 6 in the 2nd makes no sense other than financial reasons. Anyways I'm happy I got up. My set went ok, was kind of messing around and just winging it. I think it went decent for performing for a tired, comedy competition crowd. I did a little crowd work, it's tough there as it's so bright.
The next night I went back to the Palace for open mic night. My friend is the host and he was kind enough to put me on the list. I messed around a little more, tried some jokes. But they were kinda dumb, and laughed more when people messed up then actual set up jokes. Oh well. Dat Phan was there hanging out, I guess he never even went on stage. I'm not sure why he would hang out other than to get people to talk to him. I guess he went to the Dreamstreet show last Friday and recruited people to help him promote his Palace show. Slight fall from grace, but he did achieve what we're all struggling for so can't knock the guy.
After the Palace I went to a slight dive bar that has an open mic with music and comedy. It's slightly unstructed as they don't light people, so some musicians do like 20 minutes. It's tough to wrangle the crowd back in to listen to jokes. I was 7th on the list and by 1045, I hadn't even gone up. 0 point 0 percent of the crowd was listening. Normally I'd at least attempt, but I'd get nothing out of it other than sadness. I took my name off the list and headed home. The only reason I went them was to meet my friend who I hadn't seen in awhile and she flaked. Actually she sent my call right to voicemail. Pretty lame considering I never call people. I got some text this am about how she feel asleep...blah blah. Why are women in this town so lame?
