Somewhat busy and opened a weekend
Long week. Sunday I work/ performed at the Comedy Store. I went up third. I tried a few jokes then just bailed and chatted with the audience and stuck jokes in between. I think I really opened up the show and made things easier for the comics that followed me. I had a few audience members say they enjoyed me, even the ladies I picked on. Another comic told me not to worry, if I went up later I would have done much better. He didn't mean anything by it, but it was slightly a backhanded compliment. He said me and another guy at the Store are the best at crowd work. I would have to agree.
Monday was the open mic. Small, small, small crowd. But I think I did fine. Somewhat dug myself a hole by insulting one of the comics, in my humorous way. But I crawled out of it working hard and trying out some new funny jokes. I was happy with it overall.
Tuesday was a charity show at the Store. I wasn't expecting to go up, but when I get there I see I'm doing ten minutes in the middle of the show. Well I was somewhat blah about it. I never know how these shows are gonna go, and I like to have some idea on whether I'm going up on a given night. Anyways, the entire crowd was young, hip, and friends. This is usually my target audience. They liked me from the start and started off very strong. I struggled a bit in the middle, but ended strong. I was happy with it, and the head security guard said I probably got the best reaction.
Wednesday was Winston's. I went up before and tried some more newish jokes. Most of them went well and I was happy about it. Had a few of the newer people say they really enjoy me, which is always great to hear.
Friday was Winston's and this was a travesty. Wow, I knew it was going to be bad but no one could have expected it to be this bad. It was likely the hardest ten minutes I've done in a long time. But I didn't feel bad. I made it through the struggle. Sometimes I get off stage at the Store after not doing so well, feeling like I could die, but I felt more alive after the Winston's set. Half the crowd, that the co headliner brought in a limo, didn't speak English. I could have packed it in, shit on the crowd, but I kept plugging away with my jokes. I told the bartender not to put the dude on the tab, cause he was such a douchey douche magee. Anyways, were outside chatting, a limo drives by, she jokingly says I bet that's him. I say no that is him. She laughs, limo parks, he gets out. Ahhh comedy, why must you attract these people.
Saturday was a long day. I worked at the OB Beach Ball from 10 to 6, got quite a bit of sun. Even made it to the gym, granted only for 15 minutes, but I made it. After OB, I went to the Store. It was all older comics. Like from the 70's. A girl walked in, saw the first act, and said "are they from the 70's?" I simply said, "Yup." They opened by spraying and spitting beer into the crowd and got on the piano players' equipment. Such a stupid play. Next guy was like an awful open mic er, and I was told he's been doing the same set for 30 years. WOW! Headliner was funny enough, just very old school.
So I was asked to open the show. I knew it was going to happen eventually, but wasn't excited or looking forward to it. Just want to be recognized. Obviously the day I'm pretty tired and slightly buzzed I'm asked to open the show. Not only did I have to open a show featuring comics my dad's age, which drew a crowd my grandparents age, but I had to host the entire show. Which I hate hosting shows with people I don't know. Plus it's just annoying to have to go up after people and just bring up the next comic. It works so much better to just bring up the next person. It ruins the whole flow to have another person brought into the mix.
We'll my set was meh. I was nervous and don't think I ever really got comfortable on stage. I got some laughs, but nothing steady and just wasn't great, esp. with a crowd of 130 or so. I did around 6 minutes of sub par. The door guy and a few other people said I did well. But I truly don't think I did as well as I could have. Wasn't prepared the way I should have been. And fumbled to where I wanted to go. Granted I got 5 minutes to prepare, but I should have a solid 7 minutes "in the can." I was happy about the way I hosted, and thought that was the best part of my set. I think I fumbled at the closing, and said "email ccccaaaards," which got a chuckle, think I screwed up a dude's name, but think my hosting was much better than the set.
